Lymphatic Drainage Massage: What to Expect and How It Helps

Lymphatic Drainage Massage: What to Expect and How It Helps

Lymphatic drainage massage is one of the gentlest treatments we offer, and one of the most asked about. If you have been told it could help you, or you are simply curious, here is what it involves and what to expect at Clinic 88.

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of very gentle massage that encourages the natural movement of lymph fluid through the body. Unlike a deep tissue or remedial massage, it uses light, rhythmic strokes that follow the direction of your lymphatic system. It should never be painful.

Who can it help?

People commonly see our lymphatic therapists for:

  • Swollen legs or arms due to fluid retention
  • Swelling of a limb: pre or post-surgery
  • Lymphoedema
  • Lipoedema
  • Post-mastectomy or breast cancer treatment
  • Breast tenderness & congestion
  • Fibromyalgia & Lupus
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Hormonal & emotional imbalances
  • Cellulite fat accumulation

What happens in your first session?

Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your health history, any surgery or treatment you have had, and what you want from the sessions. Your therapist then assesses the areas involved and begins treatment with light, repetitive strokes. Wear loose fitting clothing to your appointment.

Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing, and some feel lighter or notice reduced swelling after the first visit. Your therapist will also talk with you about the other tools that can support your results, such as compression garments, bandaging, lymphatic pumps and simple exercise.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the reason you are coming in. Swelling after a recent procedure may settle within a few sessions, while ongoing conditions such as lymphoedema are usually managed with regular appointments over time. Your therapist will give you an honest recommendation at your first visit.
